Cultured Forms
2024

This ceramic dish set draws inspiration from the intricate beauty and organic chaos found within Petri dishes, where mold cultures bloom into unexpected patterns. A fusion of science and art, each piece mimics the delicate growths of mold—swirling, spreading, and thriving—rendered in glazes and textures that invite both curiosity and discomfort.

By designing tableware that evokes the very organisms we avoid in our food, this work explores the tension between nourishment and decay. The act of eating from plates patterned after microbial growth creates a visual and conceptual juxtaposition—where appetite meets aversion, and sustenance intersects with the subtle, often invisible forces of decomposition.

This set challenges traditional ideas of cleanliness and beauty in dining culture, encouraging a reconsideration of the boundaries between the natural and the unnatural, the scientific and the domestic, the repulsive and the exquisite.
