The art of bed rotting

My project explores the concept of "bed rotting," a term often associated with laziness or a lack of productivity. Traditionally viewed in a negative light, rest and relaxation—especially when prolonged—are frequently dismissed as unproductive. However, I aim to challenge this perspective and emphasize the essential and transformative value of rest.

In a society defined by relentless work and the view of the body as merely a tool, it’s time to shift our mindset. Rest is not a sign of weakness or idleness but a powerful act of self-care and renewal. Like the natural process of decay in the environment, rest can lead to growth and rejuvenation. When organic material decomposes, it enriches the soil and fosters new life. Similarly, when we rest, we allow ourselves to recharge, heal, and emerge renewed.

The centerpiece of this work, a mattress in a natural setting, serves as a visual metaphor for this transformative process. The mattress evolves from a mundane object into a representation of the nurturing and restorative power of rest. The mold growing on its surface symbolizes decomposition and organic growth, while the stains left behind reflect the human experience—marks of presence, rest, and transformation. These details tell a story of relaxation and introspection, reframing rest not as a waste of time but as an essential act of renewal.
